He was really cute. He used to carry my bag, fetch things for me and stuff like that. One day I whispered into his ear that he could screw me for this. He flushed, and then he laughed...

...Für uns war es das Paradies. Man konnte sich die Jungs nehmen, wenn man Lust auf sie hatte, und wenn man keinen Bock mehr hatte, nahm man sich halt ’nen anderen. Von Micha zum Beispiel wusste ich, dass er ’ne ganze Zeit lang tierisch auf mich stand. Der war echt süß. Immer hat er meine Tasche getragen und mir Sachen geholt und so. Irgendwann hab ich ihm ins Ohr geflüstert, dass er dafür einen Fick bekommt. Da ist er rot geworden, dann hat er gelacht...


Breakdance is based on video images taken at Breakdance No. 2, a popular teenage meeting place at a Ruhr Area fair. While the adolescents, watching the surrounding happenings, stand in the image foreground, the colorfully lit wagons from the fast-paced fun ride in the background become blurred. Without any actual technical intervention, the impression is made that the adolescents are standing in front of a projected backdrop or were mounted into the moving background image per blue-key. The image plane is complemented by a first-person narrator coming out of the ‘off’: a girl recalls a summer, which she spent with her clique at the fair. She talks about a life full of violence, disappointed yearnings and lost prospects.
The central theme of the film is the interface between childhood and adulthood as a phase of life, during which the own identity is continuously being put into question and essential weight is ascribed to the influence of role models. The point is to display adolescent life from a subjective perspective and take this world, with its own rules, values and legalities seriously.

Breakdance basiert auf Videobildern, die am Breakdance No. 2, einem beliebten Treffpunkt der Kirmesjugend auf der Cranger Kirmes in Herne, aufgenommen wurden. Während im Vordergrund die Jugendlichen stehen und das bunte Treiben verfolgen, verschwimmen im Hintergrund die farbenprächtig beleuchteten Wagen des rasanten Fahrgeschäftes. Ohne dass ein tatsächlicher technischer Eingriff erfolgt ist, entsteht der Eindruck, die Jugendlichen ständen vor einer Rückprojektion oder wären per Blue-Key in das bewegte Hintergrundbild hineinmontiert worden. Die Bildebene wird durch eine aus dem Off kommende Ich-Erzählerin ergänzt: ein Mädchen erinnert sich an einen Sommer, den sie mit seiner Clique auf der Kirmes verbracht hat. Es erzählt von einem Leben voller Gewalt, enttäuschter Sehnsucht und Perspektivlosigkeit. breakdance thematisiert die Schnittstelle zwischen Kindheit und Erwachsensein als eine Lebensphase, in der die eigene Identität immer wieder in Frage gestellt wird und in der der Orientierung an Vorbildern ein wesentliches Gewicht zukommt.
